I think CNKS has given you the straight skinny on the carb below. If you've gotten it way out of wack, though, best to read the smoke. If the exhaust is making a blackish kind of smoke -- too rich, turn in that main jet. If it's gray to white -- too lean, more fuel flow by turning out the jet screw. The best way to set carb jetting is with an exhaust gas temp gauge - go for around 1100 degrees on a tractor.

Also, just a possibility, when's the last time you set the ignition timing, or checked the plugs?
Retarded igntion and fouled plugs might cause the problems you're having.
