straight pipe burns valves??????

Hi to anyone who can help me. I just got finished doing an engine overhaul on my 44 H, and I was thinking about putting a straight pipe on it. But my dad was telling me the it might burn up my exhaust valves. I just wanted a second opinion about it so could someone please help me. Thanks
