Here is where a voltmeter has an advantage over an ammeter. With a 6 volt system, you should have between 6.9 and 7.2 volts at the battery, with the engine running. With a 12 volt system, you should have between about 13.8 and 14.5 volts.

The highter these voltages above the norm, the more water your battery will use.
