7.9 appears to be a little bit high. You will know for sure if your battery starts using water. Something around 7.0 to 7.3 would be a little better. You said your meter is not that accurate, so you might be in good shape. You might be worse off, too. A few tenths of a volt is critical to a battery. You really should be down near the 7.0 end of the scale. I use a Fluke digital and I'm happy with it. When I did aircraft electrical systems with it, calibration was an FAA requirement. Everytime I had this meter certified, it was well within specs. The average do-it-yourself person may not wish to drop $300 for a meter, though. You might look around and see if you can find a mechanic or an electronic technician who has a good digital meter. If you can borrow it for five minutes, you'll know where you stand.
