If your just fooling around with the tractor and don't intend to work it much, you "may" get by with new rings. I hope so because of the expense, from what you say about your wife balking on a manual, she will freak on an overhaul. Rings, gaskets, and a head job are going to cost around 450. I just went thru an engine so I know what it takes. I was furtunate, the sleeves and pistons were within tolerance. Have fun, make it a project. By the way, pistons MUST come out through the top. Ergo, the head must come off.I would hate to see you remove the head without at the very least having the valves freshened up.
