Mine did the exact thing last week. It was running great, I was adjusting the carb and then it started to sound like a JD. My carb was just rebuilt, all new plugs, wires, points, etc. I cleaned up the new plugs, dressed the points and still sounded like a JD. I then decided to take the carb apart. I cleaned out EVERY part of the carb., I didn't see anything other than some particles in the screen. Put it together (used an IH carb. kit$$)and it sounds great!!!. The only problem I had was the carb started to leak where the optional plug drain is so I put in a brass plug and that solved that. Then yesterday the needle valve didn't work and I had a puddle on the floor, I put the old aftermarket needle and seat back in and I am fine. From what i am told the smallest speck of dirt can cause problems and I believe it.
