Considering your useage I wouldn't worry about it. It will probably run that way for the next 20 years if all you do is mow a couple of acres every couple of weeks. Best way to check the rings is by doing a compression check. Newbie?? New to tractor mechanics or new to mechanics? That can be a hard question to answer but these are probably the simplest engines ever made to work on, if you have tools, a clean place to work, the desire to learn and a good set of shop manuals for your A I think most anyone could rebuild the engine. There is always a lot of help on this board too if you run into something that's not explained in the manuals.
