John I would tighten the drive dog more than hand tight, but it is right hand thread so it should get tight when you pull the lift leaver, don't understand why it is not. As for the drive having so play it should it is a shaft with a sleve on each end with a gotter pin through it to hold it in place. If you are asking about the drive dog on the transmission shaft by it's self after you put it on, no it should not have play and the bearing is bad could be why it does not tighten up.
