Painting a grease insert?

I'm about to paint the body of my H and I was wondering how I should tackle the grease inserts? I'm going to replace them all. Should I replace them, paint over them, and then just scrape the paint out of the hole? Or should I leave the old ones on there, paint it, replace the painted inserts,and then touch up the inserts with a paint brush? Your suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
