You don't have to take the gear off the shaft to replace the seal. The coupling piece comes off the shaft by unscrewing it counter clockwise. They get locked on real tight because the power to the pump screws them on tighter. Once you get the coupling piece off, if you have the pump apart, the shaft and gear piece will slide out and you can replace the seal easily. To unscrew the coupling piece, I made a wood clamp out of oak that would fit the gear, clamped the gear in a vise and then used a square bar in the coupling slot to unscrew the coupling half. It took several sharp raps on the bar with a hammer to free up the coupling.
