The linkage behind the carb is tied into the diesel/gas switch over lever. In diesel mode it locks up the float to stop gas flow to the carb. There is a cross shaft that goes through the to the other side of the engine that works the mechanism. Since you are missing part of it, there are some other things too. The switchover mechanism operates some butterflies in the manifold to shut off air flow through the carb in diesel mode and also operated an ignition switch located in a chamber in the front end of the manifold. In diesel mode, the magneto is grounded to stop spark. And of course the lever also works the third valves in the head to reduce the compression ratio for gas operation. I think you should order up yourself a service manual and an operators manual. They explain all this quite well. A parts catalog is nice to have too.
