Hi, it has been 40 years since I worked on 300U. I believe there was an inspection hole on the bottom of the bell howsing/torque tube that would allow you to see the pressure plate/release bearing. With the tractor idling and in neutral and brakes locked you should be able to see if the release bearing is turning or not.
Is there grease fittings on the release bearing carrier assembly or has my memory of 300U become muddled with JD 420 that we owned at the same time ? Great tractor the 300U, would pull a 17 tooth spring tooth harrow in heavy soil in 4th direct drive. The only down fall was the small gas tank and you had to fill it 3 times a day. JB
