Battery Box preservation

The battery box on my super A is starting to show some rust from the battery acid getting on it. I tried to put some plastic shopping bags around the battery so it could not leak on the metal, but that did not work. How do all of you keep the battery box from rusting out or at least how do you postpone the inevitable?
