I believe what you have there is a load check valve....its purpose is to prevent any oil from leaving the rod end of the cylinder unless there is a slightly higher pressure on the base end supply or vise versa. It will prevent cavitation of cylinder when you are lowering with a reduced GPM like when you are idling or when pump is not pumping. We use them alot on hyd. motors to lock them from turning or from overspeeding when turning an unbalanced load. The valve will have a shuttle and spring and a couple of seat assemblies sometimes using balls.I bet that if you have a two way cylinder and don't run tractor , the hitch will lower when you push lever now.Hope this helps....

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
