It sounds like it is an overriding clutch as other post indicated. Is the "play" in it in the normal direction of rotation or the override part? To remove it you need to take out the greese fittings. It is held on by a roll pin that goes through the pto shaft so you need to line it up so you can drive out the pin. Similarily when you put it back the pin needs to be pushed in far enough so the overriding clutch will work.
