I have an (a) that I am restoring, basically the same as yours, I also replaced the gauge and it is normal for the gauge not to move I found out. It was a mistake on Farmalls part as far as I am concerned, They should have located the threads for the gauge at the top (hot water) rather than the bottom which is the cooled water. It is a little disapointing to put on a new gauge and never get to see it do anything. If you ever see the gauge go into the run area your tractor is hot!! You can remedy this by plugging the lower hole, and tapping and threading the upper one to fit the gauge, then you should see it do somthing.
