Hi guys, Many thanks for the replies. JB - yes the oil level does go down....too fast for my liking! The dipstick oil doesn't seem particularly thin and smells of oil as far as I can tell. One IH specialist told me that on these engines the injector seals can leak a small amount of water into the cylinders which may account for the crankcase fumes being quite watery (i.e. a bit like steam). After 40 hours of mowing with an 8' finishing mower I think it's safe to say that the problem isn't due to lack of use/hard work......especially as the problem looks like it's getting worse! My plan of action is to install new sleeves/pistons and have the head checked for leaks. I was thinking about doing this myself with a friend who's pretty good mechanically (I'm not that experienced and nervous about this level of job), but I've had a price from a local ag. engineering co. which isn't out of the way, so I may let them do it. I also have some come-back against them if anything goes wrong!! I'll let you know what the result is.
