IH1086 question

The behavior of my IH1086 is starting to trouble me. Everytime I press in the clutch with a load on the machine, the clutch seems to engage properly but after a split second there is a jerk and a awful metallic "thud" that comes from the rear-end. If I press in the clutch while going down hill or under no load, I don't seem to hear or feel the problem. Again, the clutch seems to be engaging just fine but something has to be amiss.

I'm almost scared to ask but would anybody know what might be going on and how to fix it?
