The taper bushing in the drive pulley that is attached to the pto shaft my have the splines worn off in it. Or the pto shaft spline may be worn off. If the pto shaft stops turning when this happens, it could be the slider coupling inside of the transaxle. I noticed that the little lever that is used to engage the pto on my tractor has a lot of play in the forward and rear motion which may not let the slider coupling totally engage the splines on the clutch shaft.
