The piece your trying to remove is the packing nut I believe from your discription. It is threaded and can be removed by turning it counter clockwise with the pump clamped down to the bench or in a vise. Use a big channel locks and be easy with it. You said you had a noise in the pump you thought but check the generator also, sometimes that front bearing in the generator will get noisy and telephone noise thru the belt fooling some people.
