Farmall H ....strange noise

I've located the H that I drove as a kid,some 30 yrs. ago.It's really been neglected,but I hate to pass it up.The engine smokes some,but the troubling thing is the noise that seems to be coming from the center(clutch,pump)area. It sounds like a bearing thats shot,and the noise stops when the clutch is depressed slightly.When setting on the seat,it seems the noise is coming from directly under the seat,but when standing beside the tractor it almost sounds like the hydraulic pump is running.Tractor also growls pretty good when moving in reverse.Could this be a throwout bearing or does it sound much more serious? My better judgement tells me to pass it up,but my uncle owned this tractor over 35 years,and he taught me how to drive on it. Thanks in advance for your time and help.
