856 was probably the best tractor IH ever built. No turbo from the factory, but many have the aftermarket M&W turbo kit. It has the D-407 engine, definetly the longest lasting engine IH ever built, mabey a little expensive to overhaul, but you get what you pay for with that one. What kind of rear end noise does it have? Any noise in reverse means that someone got it into gear and Park at the same time and knocked a tooth off of reverse gear. That's fairly common. Other than that, the rear end should be pretty quiet. The serial/model number tag is located on the left side of the clutch housing. The TA's are not as troublesome as the other JD guys would have you belive. Case-IH offers a very good warranty on their new TA. 856 has 100 horsepower, definetly enough to be the big tractor on an 80 acre farm.
