If there has been some kind of mini disaster, check ONE rod / cap bearing first. If you see stripes or worn away parts, or silver color with copper colored stripes through them -- then you have a problem which was probably caused by insufficent oil getting to that part -- and logically all other rod bearings and may even the main bearings.

If the rod bearing looks clean -- that is, it is mostly gray and has no deep stripes across it - then something else was your problem.

Always remember that your should use new rod bolts everytime you check a rod bearing -- and you're going to have to do all that stuff with the gasket and sealing on the oil pan as well.

If you're near a rebuilt point, the egg shaped properties of the rod journals on the crank will tell you that you're going to soon need to pull the crank and get it re-machined. You can measure that by plastigage or a dial caliper.
