Scott: Your 656 timing marks should be on the front crank pulley. But now you have to find out whether it is on compression or exhaust. My first thoughts would be to remove number 1 glow plug. You will probably need to remove all of them to enable you to turn by hand and find out the stroke of number 1.

Another time, if I remember correctly most diesels have a pin you put through chassis into flywheel, when at top dead center so it can't be moved while disassembled.
