H steering gear

I have some play in the streering gear of my 48 H. I took the cap off the top of the gear housing and all looked OK. The worm gear has some lost motion when you turm it left and right. Is this normal or is there a way to take that lost motion out. The steering gear does not seem to be worn, from what I can see. Would replacing the worm gear help? Also the U joint in the steering shaft has some play. Can the U joint be rebuilt? How is it removed off of the steering wheel shaft?
