The timing gears are supposed to be match-marked on an F-20, but if you don't want to go to the trouble of taking the front cover off, here's a simple way to tell. As the piston in any cylinder passes top dead center going from the exhaust stroke to the intake stroke, the valves should rock and overlap just as the piston crosses top dead center. This is true on any internal combustion engine -- or it at least should be close enough for the engine to run correctly.
