Do you use your M's PTO

I am having a lot of trouble with my M's PTO. It slips when under a heavy load. What can I do? Mine is the earily type with the flat plate on the outside. Is the later one any more dependible? Does the later one also use the two probes that mesh with the tranmission shaft or is it splined on both the PTO and transmission shaft?
Are the two interchangible?
Do any of you use your PTO?
