Overheating on a Super C

I ran my tractor for 8 to ten hours on different days mowing with a Cylone 60 shredder. During the last two hours, I noticed that the temp had gone from the usual 185 to 250. I shut it down as soon as possible and discovered about six to eight quarts of water boiled off. I have found no leaks. Local tractor mechanics suggest a stuck thermostat. Are there other possible causes for the sudden overheating and\or water loss? There is no water in the oil and the oil is at normal level.
