Hi Mike, I think the tolerance would be "0". But, look again; make sure that ridge is not just carbon build-up. The rule of thumb I always went by was if I could "grab" the ridge with my fingernail. Then later, I got to going by if I could "shake" the piston from side to side. Finally, I started just going thru the engine from top to bottom if they ever started eating oil. And here's the reason: The trouble with just doing a valve job (and, I've seen this 100's of times) is that the top end gets tightened up and the lower end cannot stand the increased higher pressures. Before long, she's knocking on the bottom end and you have to do the whole thing anyway. Hope I didn't depress you, Allan
