The small tank would indicate a distillate engine. The head would likely be a lower compression head than used on a gasoline engine. Increasing compression ratio should increase power. Bear in mind, however, that a tractor of this age may have been overhauled in the past with precisely that purpose in mind. 30 - 40 years ago you could easily buy sleeve and piston sets in combinations which would push the compression ratio up on a distillate engine to levels which were comparable to a gasoline engine. We did this on a '43 H which was built for distillate fuel. Check to see what pistons may have been installed before investing in a new head. IH, M&W, and some other companies made sleeve and piston sets that could bump up the ratios to about the limit of what the engine could stand for serious field work.
