The clear stuff was water, most likely condensation, unless there was alot, then most likely rain water that found it's way down the exaust stack.
For a flush use kerosene, if the sludge is really bad, add 1 quart of kerosene to your oil and run the engine for 10 minutes, then drain while still hot.
Or remove the oil pan and give it a bath. And use a pump sprayer of kerosene, or a spray can of Gunk degreaser. After washing, give everything a liberal bath in WD-40..or something similar.
