You've gotten some good advice, but I think maybe if it runs I might just see if I could get a good deal on oil, and get a couple of filters and change the oil alot. Make sure you change it warm too, you don't want the gunk to settle out, you need it to drain. This is generally how I treat a used car. I make the first change as soon after I get it as I can, make the next one at about 1,000 miles, after that at 2,000 and then move to the 3,000 limit. Usually after the first two times the tappets will quiet down a bit and fuel mileage will improve. Usually no matter how much they swear it people never change their oil when they should.
