Bad Engine noises???

Seems like I now have some bad noises coming from the front of my C and they seem to get worse as the engine starts to warm up. I am pretty sure it is not the fan although I plan to take that belt off just to make sure. At what point am I well advised to keep it shut down and to pull the pan to look for damage or bits of metal? So far I have only run it for a minute or two at a time.
