Hi, does it use any crankcase oil? If it was out of time it would smoke but I dought if it is out of time because it starts good. My brother has a 454D that has the same 3 cyl 179D in it. It has well over 10,000 hrs on it and it doesn't use a drop of oil between changes. It smokes a bit of Diesel smoke when it is not warmed up. Is your thermostat working properly to keep the engine up to proper running tempature? The other thing is these engines can easily be over fueled by adjusting the fuel shut off stop screw on the injector pump. If yours is smoking because of over fueling, you can test this by not pulling the Stop/Start/Run lever all the way to the top of the Run position. Let us know what you find. JB
