If it were mine, I would pull the pan off to clean. Those old engines did not have full flow oil filters so if a pour in cleaner was used, all that crud would be circulated in the engine chewing up bearings. By pulling the pan, you know its all gone. After reassembling, Fill it with auto trans fluid and go for a ride on it making sure it gets completely up to temp. Sludge forms when blowby fumes and condensation don't get evaporated by enough heat. The ATF has lots of detergents which will help clean it out. Hope this helps, Brian
