These methods may sound crude they have worked for me on long steel things needing straightening.
1. Find a couple trees close together, position the shaft between them and pull.
2. I've been able to hammer rods straight against a long anvil (actually a piece of railroad track).
3. Support it using a vise and a block of wood on the garage floor. Then lower something heavy on it (like the rear tractor wheel slowly let down with a hydraulic jack).

I'm open to other menthods.
