Farmall 200 Carb Rebuild Question

I bought the rebuild kit for the Zenith carb on my Farmall 200. It was leaking and pretty well gummed up with black crud, so I figured why not? Everything going pretty well except that, when re-assembling the float/seat assembly, the rebuild kit came with this itty-bitty, sort of U-shaped, fairly stiff spring that I don't remember being on the original carb. It was in the bag with the new float pin, seat, etc. How do I fit it on? Does it go in the notch in the float valve, or around the float pin? Is its purpose to keep the float in one or another direction or to open the valve against the float? The instructions that came with the rebuild kit are of no help. Hope someone with more experience has some suggestions.
