A 6 volt system in proper working condition will be just as reliable as a twelve volt and actually 6 volt magneto ignition is hotter than 12 volt coil ignition when every thing is set right. Also you can install an 8 volt battery in a 6 volt system for harder cranking engines. The drawbacks to a 6 volt system are dimmer headlights and more things to keep maintained like magnetos, generator cutouts. I personally believe that anything designed as a 6 volt should stay that way.
