The gen on my Super H never gets too hot to touch - even after a long run in hot weather. I'd guess it runs 110 to 120 deg max, and generally a lot less. You could have a pole shoe rubbing on the armature. Take off the brush band and shine a light inside toward the front (pulley) end of the gen. If the armature is dragging you should find metal shavings/dust inside. Or try turning the armature by hand. If it's rubbing, you should be able to feel and hear it. Another (remote) possibility: A grounded armature winding, or 2 commutator bars shorted together. Test with your VOM. A good armature will show infinite resistance between each commutator bar and the shaft, and between adjacent commutator bars. Resistance between OPPOSITE commutator bars should be very close to 0 ohms.
