Mark - The fact that it has spark but won't fire even with ether shot into the carb leads me to think you've got a blown head gasket or a hole burned thru the head. Could also be a valve sticking open.

My inlaws have a Cub Cadet with a 12 HP Kohler. In 30 or so years of hard use it's blown out several head gaskets, and has burned a hole thru the cylinder head twice. Symtoms are a loss of power at first, followed shortly by a "no start" situation exactly as you describe.

One other possibility: If the engine's been sitting for a long time the cylinder may be dry so it cannot build compression. Try squirting a tablespoon or so of engine oil into the cylinder thru the spark plug hole, then replace the plug and see if it will start.
