Starting it out in road gear is the easiest since most guys won't have anything to hook it up to try it out. Just pull the TA back and let out the clutch, then as its still under a somewhat heavy lug push it forward -quickly-. If it seems like you just changed gears its working -for the most part. It might need adjustment even if it seems to be working fine.

If its out, you let the clutch out in road gear and the tractor doesn't move or barely moves you have a strong negotiation point. It will most likely work OK in the high side only limiting you to 5 forward speeds (or does a 340 only have 4?). Make sure you check by starting out in road gear with the TA lever forward. I have never seen the high side go out but I am sure it can happen, others here will tell you. We ran a 656 and a 560 with the TAs out for years without any problems.
