What I use and find effective for mice are "Tin Cats". They are a tin trap that catches the mice alive. I put crackers with peanut butter in the tin cats for bait. Find where the mice run, usually along a wall and put the tin trap there with the openings next to the wall.

I also have cats, dogs and birds, so don't like poison.
