Hugh - You were lucky to get 'em just in the torque tube! I was laid up once for a couple months with a broken right arm and could not drive my van (manual transmission). While the car was parked mice built an entire condominium inside the heater. Required disassembly of the dash, then removal, disassembly and a pressure wash of the entire heater and ductwork to get rid of the debris and smell.

More recently I thought it a bit odd being continually dive bombed by a robin after I got the Super M out to pull the cultimulcher thru my mother in law's garden. Only after small, smokey fire started under the hood did I understand why...an enterprising robin had built her nest atop the manifold.
