I think your truck guy is shooting in the dark...mainly because the L-series trucks were 1950 to 1952 models (some leftover '52's were sold & titled as '53's in some locations). So let's look at this logically. If it's from an L-series, that would be '50 to '52...but that number doesn't come up in my parts books for the SD-220/SD-240 used in most L-series thru 170. It might be from an RD-series, but since those were larger sixes, I don't think that's likely. My best guess would be a BD-series engine. My Glenn Mitchell Interchange Manual shows the '57-'59 BD-220 to use a 164415-R head, and the '60-'63 BD-240/BG-241 to use a 164415-R head. And walking outside to examine my '51 and '52 L-110 pickups didn't reveal any external casting numbers...but it did bring something else to mind. The stock SD-220 engine in the '51 uses a narrower valve cover, as it's what is referred to as a "non-tilt valve" engine...while the BD-264 that somebody transplanted into the '52 uses a wider and taller bvlave cover, and IS what they call a "tilt-valve" engine.

So the "tilt-valve" vs. "non-tilt valve" heads might also affect piston clearance; that is, if your pistons are set up for a tilt-valve head, a non-tilt valve head might have some piston-to valve interference. I know this probably confuses the issue some, but from what I'm discovering--since I don't have a '53-up truck parts manual--is that you've probably got a BD-220 or BD-240 head, of the non-tilt valve variety. BTW, my parts book shows the SD-220/240 head part number to be 76980-R92 (with valves) and 76979-R91 (with guides only).

Hope this is more help than hindrance!

Today's Featured Article - An AC Model M Crawler - by Anthony West. Neil Atkins is a man in his late thirties, a mild and patient character who talks fondly of his farming heritage. He farms around a hundred and fifty acres of arable land, in a village called Southam, located just outside Leamington Spa in Warwickshire. The soil is a rich dark brown and is well looked after. unlike some areas in the midlands it is also fairly flat, broken only by hedgerows and the occasional valley and brook. A copse of wildbreaking silver birch and oak trees surround the top si ... [Read Article]
