Actually Jimmy, what you had was the M-14 service rifle. Basically the same action as the M-1 Garand but modified to accept a magazine rather than the Garands's C-clip which held 8 rounds. The M-14 also had a flash suppressor, which the M-1 did not. Last, but not least, the M-14 was chambered for the .308 NATO round as opposed to the M-1 being chambered in 30-06. Almost identical cartridges, but .308 is a hair shorter than 30-06. I have an original Springfield Armory M-1 Garand that's still got armorer's chalk marks on it as well as the factory ink stamps. Shoots like a dream but I only take her out once a year as it was my 21'st birthday present from my father. I want this one to last! You'll see all sorts of names on these beautiful rifles...Rockola (made jukeboxes), Remington (made typewriters in the factory that was converted during WWII), IHC, a few others but I forget at the moment.
