As has been mentioned, the ring gears on the old Ms get worn and the starter bendix gear gets hung up on a tooth. Loosen the starter and see if you can turn the engine via the fan blades. Tighten the starter back in and you should be OK. My neighbor Ernie has an old M that hangs up once out of every 20 starts. We keep a 7/8" box wrench in the tool box on the tractor. Depending on which year you have, you will have either a 2 bolt starter to the frame or a 3 bolt with a smaller bolt head in the later Ms.
