Check your ignition coil or magneto. I had problems with an old 1965 Mustang where the original coil would get hot and drop voltage. It would idel fine, but when I put it in gear, it died. I guess changing the engine loading or fuel mixture was enough to make a weak spark not fire. I changed the coil and had no problems since. This also happened on my 1962 Comet.
