Finally, after two years of diddling. It was the voltage regulator, just like I thought. The old one had been run with the battery hooked up backwards for years, small wonder it was no good. I had ordered the new one last august and when I worked on it in May I kinda assumed that Reg had had the forsite to put it on. So when I couldn't get it to charge I tried all sorts of things. Then when I was up in August I tried polarizing things to no avail. I was about to buy another regulator when Reg let slip he hadn't put the new one in. I installed it and polarized the way it says to in the instructions. I heard a quiet "thup" when I did which I had never heard from the old one...Hmm, small wonder. Then once I started the tractor the ammeter jumped way up and then settled just on the high side of 0. Of course now after four or five years of deep cycling the battery isn't any good, but Optima now makes a gel 6 volt battery that's not too expensive, I think I'll get one of those.
