Whew... The worst of all worlds. What I have seen in the past - everything dis-connected - ignition switch off - You have a high resistance short. And the bad thing is it could be anywhere in the harnesss - starter - key switch. What usually is the cause is a corrosion run going from positive to negative. Best place to start is to disconnect the key switch. Mark all the wires before you do it. Then if the spark is still there disconnect the gauges - one at a time. Then the starter, regulator - generator. Then when nothing is connected to the harness - you have a identified a shorted harness. Sorry for the long winded trouble shooting process. But after 40 to 50 years of water & fertilizer - cracks in the insulation - this is not uncommon.
