Yeah, I concur on the color and smell. That's why I wondered. The other oil I know of that's red is ATF. Again it's a thin oil so maybe it got put there to thin out the heavy stuff. You never said where you were, but I know my great Uncles used to put kerosene in until the '50s and then put in Marvel Oil because that way they didn't have to change it out in the summer. ATF smells more like motor oil than Marvel and I still think that it wouldn't take too much to change the color of the gear oil.
